Mackinac Bridge Celebration Oral History Project

The Michigan Oral History Association (MOHA) conducted fifteen
interviews with men who planned, photographed, and worked on the
building of the bridge from 1954-1957.  MOHA volunteers also
interviewed family members of deceased workers, administrators, and photographer for their memories of this important event in Michigan history and their families.

Volunteers arrived on Thursday, July 26 and
conducted interviews through Saturday, July
28, when the celebrations in St. Ignace's
Bridge View Park started to wind down.  This
small group of dedicated MOHA members
recorded the oral histories in a specially
equipped mobile recording studio, furnished
by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Funding is now being sought to transcribe
the tapes and digital files for use by
researchers.  The original recordings, and
subsequent transcriptions, will be housed at
the State Archives of Michigan.

If you are able to assist in funding the transcription portion of this project please contact Geneva Kebler Wiskeman, Secretary for MOHA, at:
